Where they hold
Speckled trout live in the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. Grass beds, oyster rakes, and shallow sand flats adjacent to deeper channels are their territory. They do not handle cold well — water temps below 50°F push them deep.
Tide
Trout are active on both tides but rising water over grass flats early morning is a consistent producer. They feed aggressively in low light — first and last light outfish midday.
How to fish them
- Topwater walking lures at first light is the most exciting way to target specks. Work it slow.
- Soft plastics on a jighead (1/4–3/8oz) over grass and along channel edges.
- Live shrimp under a popping cork is one of the most effective inshore techniques.
- Gold spoons fished slowly through grass beds produce when other presentations fail.
- Fluoro leader 20–25lb — trout are not leader shy but they have teeth that abrade mono.
- Work grass edges, not the open flat. Trout ambush from cover.
Pro Tip
Speckled trout have soft mouths. Do not horse them to the boat. Keep steady pressure and a bowed rod — let the rod fight the fish, not your arm. More fish are lost at the net than anywhere else.
