Drum on the Slack, Pomps in the Wash — Week of Sep 1

Cape Hatteras Point is holding at 82.2°F and the surf's laying down clean — 2ft at 9 seconds with a light NE 7. Pompano bite has been steady in the wash on sand fleas and Fishbites. Work the low tide slide from 05:43 into the incoming, and hit that second window at 18:13 for the evening feed. Drum are prowling the sloughs — cut mullet on a fish finder rig, fish the drop from high tide at 23:54 back toward the morning low. Bluefish will keep you honest during the day, throw a white bucktail through the wash if the schools push through.

Avon Pier is seeing Spanish and blues off the end on the morning bite — get out there before the 11:08 high slacks it out. Kings have been showing in the deeper water off the T — live bait on a wire rig, pin a bluefish or a big mullet. Pompano on the Hi-Lo along the second sandbar, fish the incoming into the 11:08 high.

Hatteras Inlet is fishing well on the flat edges. Flounder are staging on the channel drops — Carolina rig with a mud minnow or a chartreuse bucktail tipped with Gulp. Best window is the outgoing after 11:08 into the 18:13 low when the current's ripping bait through the cuts. Drum are working the sound-side flats early — topwater at first light before the sun gets on it.

Oregon Inlet is a touch cooler at 80.8°F. Flounder in the cuts on the bucktail, work the 10:37 high slack and the 22:55 evening high. Sound-side flats have been giving up drum on the low incoming — 05:02 low is your window, get shallow with a topwater stick or a gold spoon before the boat traffic shows up.

Down in Murrells Inlet it's 83.3°F with big 5.8ft tides moving serious water. Redfish are tight in the spartina on the flood — hit the 10:04 and 22:27 highs, pitch a topwater or a weedless soft plastic to the grass edges. Trout in the deeper holes on the falling tide out of the 10:04 high into the 16:34 low. Flounder on the channel drops with a Carolina rig, drift the current seams.

Folly Beach is the warmest at 84.6°F with a chance of thunder rolling through today — watch the sky. Redfish are in the trough on the incoming into the 10:32 high, cut mullet on a fish finder rig. Whiting and pompano on the Hi-Lo through both tide swings. Spanish are close to the beach — throw a white bucktail or a small stick bait when you see birds working.
